The Miniature American Shepherd is a versatile, athletic herding breed known for its intelligence, loyalty, and deep connection to its people.
Developed in the United States from smaller Australian Shepherd lines, the breed was carefully developed to preserve working ability, soundness, and versatility in a more compact and adaptable size.
Though smaller in stature, the Miniature American Shepherd is every bit as capable as its larger counterparts. These dogs are energetic, eager to learn, and thrive when given both physical activity and mental stimulation. Their willingness to work, paired with their affectionate and loyal nature, makes them exceptional companions for active individuals and families alike.
A Balanced & Athletic Breed
In keeping with the standards established by Miniature American Shepherds of Canada (MASCAN), the breed should present as a balanced, agile dog with smooth and efficient movement that reflects its working heritage.
Miniature American Shepherds typically stand between 13 and 18 inches at the shoulder, with moderate bone and athletic structure. Their movement should appear effortless and purposeful, demonstrating the soundness and versatility the breed was originally developed for.

The formation of Miniature American Shepherds of Canada (MASCAN) in 2014 marked an important milestone in supporting and promoting the breed nationally. Since then, the breed has continued to gain recognition across Canada through several important achievements:
July 1, 2018 — Eligible to compete as a Listed Breed in CKC Group 7 (Herding)
December 2022 — Achieved enough support from CKC members for full recognition
January 2025 — Officially approved under the Animal Pedigree Act by Agriculture Canada
